Eyesore of the year 2012

Until 18 February the most irresponsible company of the year will be selected. The company with the most votes gets the „eyesore of the Year 2012“ award. The prize is sponsored by the Network Social Responsibility, a network of worker representatives and NGOs.

„The nominations regarding many areas of society, shows us, that environmental concerns and people’s needs are being trampled. We will name and shame it „says Dipl.jur. Marieta Kaufmann, coordinator of the “Schandfleck”.

Nominated this time for the jury and the public award are the following three corporations: KIK Textiles and Non Food GmbH, Mayr-Melnhof Packaging and ANDRITZ AG.

1. The company KIK Textiles and Non Food GmbH regarding with the fire incident in Karachi / Pakistan on 11 September 2012, when 259 people died due to lack of fire protection systems. Factory Ali Enterprise produced textiles for KIK. Detailed information on: http://www.schandfleck.or.at/kik_en/

2. The company Mayr-Melnhof Packaging, Europe’s largest folding cartons based in Vienna regarding with the closure of the plant in Liverpool on 29 March 2012, when the rights of the local as well as the European Works Council were ignored. 3. The company Andritz AG, based in Graz, for his participation in the Brazilian Belo Monte dam project. As a result people get displaced and extensive destruction of the environment is anticipated. The ANDRITZ Hydro GmbH is a member of the austrian business council for sustainable development, respACT, a platform of CSR-companies in Austria. „The selection of the short list has not been easy for the jury „, explains DI Dr. Franz Fiala, chairman of the Network Social Responsibility. “ Irresponsibility by the company that has become especially conspicuous show very clearly the need for stricter regulation and control of Austrian and European companies, including their foreign activities. The project “Schandfleck” is an appeal to the company and to the politicians. „

On the International Day for Social Justice, 20 of February 2013, the Network Social Responsibility will then confer the Eyesore of the Year 2012 for the worst case(s) of contempt for the environment and human rights.
